What we’ve been doing
Our clubs phone banked for Democrats in VA, canvassed for Subramanyam in the 10th, and canvassed for Vindman in the 7th Congressional Districts under the guidance of New Virginia Majority, our local unions, Tim Kaine, Harris/Walz campaign, and VA Dems. All of them won their races, save Harris/Walz. Vindman won by over 8,000 votes, and Subramanyam by over 16,000 We not only mobilized voters, but identified several excellent folks organizing with local Dems who are strong candidates for joining the united front against fascism. We’ve also been building our relationship with Palestine ceasefire organizers, made the case for strategic voting there. This was made easier by Kaine supporting a ceasefire resolution, and note that his margin of victory over Cao was nearly 60% larger than that of Harris’s over Trump. Our analysis is that ceasefire candidates can’t be discounted, and ceasefire demands increased voter palatability. We continue to stand against fascism with any who will join us, and are excited to be contributing to the coordinated struggle against genocide in Palestine together with our local organizations.
The national elections did not escape our notice, and we have a plan: it’s always a good time to fight for our rights.
What we’ve been reading
We have several small groups meeting to discuss theory and relevant readings. In one group, we read and discussed Heroic Struggle, Bitter Defeat and while we didn’t have immediate lessons for our current struggles, it helped us better understand the Soviet Union and helped us better articulate where our District faces struggles from within, usually based on a lack of organization or over-bureaucratizing which stifles dissent and creativity, and struggles from without, like changing leaders after electoral events or court cases that impact how we organize.
Another group reading the classics read Principles of Communism. The discussion here was less about applications to the clubs and more about introducing newer members to communist theory in community.
